Linda Perry and wife Sara Gilbert celebrated the birth of their first child by making Deer Sounds, a record from their family to yours. It's a suitably ragged, big-hearted affair, one that happily careens from singalongs with children's choirs to delicate lullabies, finding space for all kinds of surprises in between. The biggest of these may be 'Body Parts/Rhodes' Piano Concerto #9,' a song that begins with cute cooing from a child and builds to a 'Bohemian Rhapsody' finale, or it might be 'Pirate Ghosts,' a funhouse ride through a hall of mirrors. It's hard to pick between these two but they suggest just how idiosyncratic a children's record this is. Deer Sounds isn't for comforting playtimes, it's deliberately colorful and quirky, so it'll suit families who also prize a bit of eccentricity in their lives.
